The word 'nepenthe' is ancient Greek for "anti-sorrow", figuratively "that which chases away sorrow". It was believed to be an anti-depressant drug originated by the ancient Egyptians.

The word was selected as the name for this project mostly due to the line from Edgar Alan Poe's "The Raven" which reads "Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe, and forget this lost Lenore!'". Additionally, H. P. Lovecraft makes a few references to nepenthe in the final paragraph of the story The Outsider, including the somewhat famous quote above.
